Elevate Me! is Biking Across Canada
On July 22nd, 2010, one 21-year-old cyclist will take to the highway and begin her journey from Vancouver, BC to Winnipeg, MB by bike. More than just a lifelong goal to cycle across the country, Brenna Coupland intends to raise over $10 000 for The Shanti Uganda Society’s women’s income generating group.
This project enables 27 creative and talented HIV + women in the Luweero district of Uganda to receive trainings in textiles and jewellery (including beautiful bags made out of local fabric and beads made entirely out of recycled newspaper). These women also learn the business skills required to support themselves and their families; Collectively, these women support approximately 108 children! Because of this project, these women have been able to put ALL of their children in school. This Christmas, they received bikes and are now using them enthusiastically to travel to and from trainings, meetings and buying days.
Brenna hopes not only to raise awareness of this inspiring group across the western provinces, but also to inspire women across the country to grab hold of their own proverbial handle bars and go after their dreams! She is coordinating several events leading up to the trip, including a benefit concert in Winnipeg on April 30th, a pizza party in Vancouver on May 14th, a cycler’s soiree in Vancouver on May 23rd, and a prenatal yoga calendar project called “A Year of Inner Peace”.
Brenna has created a facebook paged called “The Moon Cycle”, where you can read about the exciting updates and find out about fund raising events happening in your city. You can also follow along on Twitter @themooncycle and donations can now be made through PayPal at http://www.shantiuganda.org/pages/the-moon-cycle .

Mt. Kilimanjaro Update
We’re back safely from Africa, and I’m happy to say that our whole team made it to the summit of Kilimanjaro! I’m also happy to say we exceeded our $150k fundraising objective! These funds will directly drive the program expansion of Power To Be and reduce waitlists, helping hundreds more underprivileged youths and families in our communities.
I wanted to thank you for all your support and providing us with the Elevate Me bars. I can say with certainty now that nutrition played a critical role in helping us all get to the summit, and your bars provided us with the nutrients and protein we needed to get to the top! You may also be interested to know the porters seemed to enjoy them as well. With a few bars left over, we decided to donate them to an orphanage in Moshi, which we visited after the climb – the orphanage appreciated the bars very much. This journey was a major life experience for each of us, and we were glad that Elevate Me was there every step of the way.
We’ll be sure to keep you posted on our next adventure, and please feel free to continue to check our site for updates (www.powertoclimb.ca)
Best,
Mike Schauch
